"Son, your sins are forgiven you."

"And it came to pass on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come from every town in Galilee, and Ju-dae-a, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
And, behold, men brought in a bed a man who was taken with palsy: and they sought to bring him in, and to lay him before Him.

And when they could not find a way in which they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and lowered him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst of Jesus.
And when He saw their faith, He said unto him, 'Son, be of good cheer;, thy sins are forgiven thee'.
And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, 'Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answering said unto them, 'What think ye in your hearts?
Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
But that ye may know that the Son of Man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (He said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto you, Arise and take up your couch, and go to your house.
And immediately he rose up before them, and took up the couch, and departed to his house, glorifying God.
And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, 'We have seen strange things this day." Luke 5:17-26

As Jesus heals this man, He teaches us two lessons, that I can see. First, He is God on earth. For only God can forgive sin. And second, though Jesus is full of compassion, and loves to grant us physical blessings, He shows us here that forgiveness of sin is of prime importance. Nothing more essential for a sinner than to be forgiven of his sins.
And Christ came foremost for this reason, as St. Matthew tells us in his Gospel, how the angel of the Lord came to Joseph and told him that Mary would bring forth a Son, "and you shall call Him Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins".

But also, He delivers us from sin's power as well, and we, once forgiven through faith, must continue to live by this faith as children of God, for we are no longer children of wrath; and of the devil.

Our sin is forgiven, not in part, but the whole. So, we are now righteous, and slaves to righteousness. The power of sin has be broken. Hallelujah!
Though we will still sin, and struggle with sin, sin has now lost it's power, and we now have the Holy Spirit living within us; teaching us His Word.
What a Savior and God we have!
