The dumbing down of the Church is so evident in America. We need to wake up, and God's people need to listen up to the "prince of preachers".

"He is inspired, and yet he wants books!

He has been preaching at least for thirty years, and yet he wants books!

He had seen the Lord, and yet he wants books!

He had had a wider experience than most men, and yet he wants books!

He had been caught up into the third heaven, and had heard things which it was unlawful for a men to utter, yet he wants books!

He had written the major part of the New Testament, and yet he wants books!

The apostle says to Timothy and so he says to every preacher, “Give thyself unto reading.” The man who never reads will never be read; he who never quotes will never be quoted. He who will not use the thoughts of other men’s brains, proves that he has no brains of his own." CH Spurgeon thoughts of (2 Tim 4:13).

Greg Dutcher, my pastor, used this quote in church last Sunday. I thought it was a good one for the days we are living in. Actually Greg used it to promote his new book that is coming out. JUST KIDDIN'.

He did use it to encourage us to read a particular book by Jerry Bridges, which I forget the title.

Greg's sermons have been from the Gospel of Mark, and we are working our way through this incredible epistle of truth. If you want to you can listen on the church's website: http://christfc.org/

Actually, it's not quite up to date, but there are his first 5 sermons on the book of Mark. Greg is an extraordinary preacher/teacher. I'd encourage anyone to have a listen.

The dumbing down of the Church in America is really evident, as is the dumbing down of America on the whole. I'm not talking about the simple little bits of trivia that people don't get on shows like Jaywalking. People seem to be painfully ignorant of current events, important parts of American history, and their own rights as citizens.

It's no wonder, then, that Christians often are equally ignorant on the important doctrines that define our faith. Learning is certainly something to encourage.

Wow! I would love to be there for that Chris.

" Learning is certainly something to encourage."

Yep. I try to encourage Christians to read their Bible, and make sure they can join a church where intellect isn't thought of as not spiritual.
Surely without knowledge God's people are destroyed, and because we reject knowledge, God wills to reject us. But God is longsufferring and full of mercy, and will hear those who cry out to Him for help.

Jay, your right about America as well. They don't study the history of America any more much. There are some good things America has done, as well as bad. But to know the truth will set you free.

And also, knowledge can puff one up, if love isn't present, and grace.
