"Quiet Strength" by Tony Dungy
I finished reading this book while on vacation. It really is a good book for everybody. It's definitely about football. But it's more about a man really; Tony Dungy. A Christian man. A simple man. A humble man. And a great man in his vocation, which was football. And a man who lost His eldest son at the age of 18.
I'd encourage anyone to read it. There's not much theology. The Gospel is there, because Tony is there; it's not "in your face" gospel, which isn't really the Gospel. And mostly it's a book of how a man lives by trusting in Christ. And it's not boring, let me tell you. There's no deep things to try and figure out, and there's not a lot of miraculous stuff. But it's an inspiring life, very much so. (At least to me it was.) And he was a man who humbled me, big time. And yet, there's no ego in this man. And so the humbling brings encouragement as well. It's a book that will build you up. (And I must say this as well. The football fan will enjoy it a lot more, I'm sure.)
Here's a couple short quotes:
"This book is not only about me,either. ...It's about the things I've learned, the mistakes I've made, and the heartaches that have made me lean into the Father's presence. I hope that when it's all said and done, you'll see that it's really all about Him."
"There are certain bridges that are not worth crossing, no matter what others think."
"We gathered for a postgame prayer. We always prayed, as a lot of teams do, both before and after the game. ...We would thank God both as gracious losers and as grateful winners."
"If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else."- Booker T. Washington
"He [the Lord] didn't call me to be successful in the world's eyes; He called me to be faithful."
There's so much I could comment on about Tony's life, but I'll just say, this man has been, and is, an example of what a man should be; a husband should be; a father should be; and a Christian should be.
Lord bless Tony Dungy. Amen.

Tony Dungy has always been one of my favorite people in the sports world and the NFL will miss the class that he brought to the game (although it sounds like he'll be around doing TV work for NBC).
I always got the sense that Tony was not going to be coaching forever and that he knew that the Lord had bigger plans for his life. May God bless him as he enters this next chapter of life.
Thanks for the review and the quotes from the book Don. I'll be looking to add this to my reading list.
