"though He causes grief, He will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; for He does not willingly afflict or grieve" Lam. 3

[Carl Heinrich Bloch (May 23, 1834 – February 22, 1890) was a Danish painter.]

"When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”" -Matthew 9:36-38

"In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade.”" -John 2:14-16

The Christian must know his Lord's heart. Surely the compassion of Christ is foremost, and His mercy the greatest truth we embrace and experience from our Savior. However, His anger and righteous discipline is essential for us to embrace as well.

May His grace help us understand His heart, so that we can know God for who He is, and not for who we make Him to be, which would be a false god in our own image. Amen.

And the only way to know our Lord is to read, study, and meditate upon His holy Word, as we participate with other believers in a local church.

"know God for who He is, and not for who we make Him to be"

There is wisdom in that.

And I agree with Maalie. Bloch's strong contrasts, his use of light attention to detail are masterful. Plus, his use of bold colors make these images really pop.
